What we see most often
Broken hinges
The lid gets stiff, then the plastic around the hinge lifts and cracks. Left alone it tears the screen cable and turns a small job into a big one, so it is worth catching early.
Will not charge
Usually the charging port has worked loose from the board, or the cable has failed. It is worth checking the cheap cause before assuming the worst.
Battery dies in minutes
Batteries wear out. A swollen one will also push the trackpad up from underneath, and at that point it needs replacing rather than ignoring.
Overheating and fan noise
Years of dust in the cooling fins, or thermal paste well past its life. The symptom is usually a laptop that runs hot, sounds like a hairdryer, then shuts itself off.
Slow, freezing, stuck on the logo
Often a failing hard drive rather than a worn out laptop. An SSD and a clean install transforms machines people are ready to throw away.
Keys not working
Individual keys, a whole row, or a keyboard that types the wrong characters. Sometimes a spill, sometimes just wear.
Liquid damage

What affects the cost
The part, mostly. A standard screen panel is very different from a touchscreen or a high refresh rate display, and some manufacturers make parts far easier to get hold of than others.
Then how much has to come apart. A battery on one machine is two screws, and on another it is a full strip down. We work that out during the free quote rather than guessing at it up front, which is why there are no prices listed on this page.

Dropped, and the panel had gone. Everything else in the machine was fine, which is usually how it goes: the screen is a separate part, so a cracked one rarely means a dead laptop.
Base off, battery disconnected, display cable unplugged from the board, old panel off, new one on. Booted first time.

Will I lose my data?
Back up anything you cannot lose before handing any device over. Some repairs need storage wiped or replaced, and a drive that is already failing can lose data regardless of what we do. Tell us what matters on it and we will work around it where we can.

It depends on whether the part is in stock or has to be ordered, so we will tell you when we quote rather than promise a time we cannot keep.
Is it worth repairing, or should I replace it?
Sometimes replacing is the right answer and we will tell you when it is. A machine worth £150 with a £120 repair is a bad deal and we would rather say so.
