Most laptop problems fall into a handful of categories, and a lot of them are worth fixing on machines people have already written off. A five year old laptop with a failing hard drive and a swollen battery is often a couple of parts away from being genuinely usable again.
The honest part matters as much as the repair. If the cost of fixing a machine is close to what it is worth, we will say so, and you can decide. Diagnosing it costs you nothing either way.
What we see most often
Broken hinges
The lid gets stiff, then the plastic around the hinge lifts and cracks. Left alone it tears the screen cable and turns a small job into a big one, so it is worth catching early.
Will not charge
Usually the charging port has worked loose from the board, or the cable has failed. It is worth checking the cheap cause before assuming the worst.
Battery dies in minutes
Batteries wear out. A swollen one will also push the trackpad up from underneath, and at that point it needs replacing rather than ignoring.
Overheating and fan noise
Years of dust in the cooling fins, or thermal paste well past its life. The symptom is usually a laptop that runs hot, sounds like a hairdryer, then shuts itself off.
Slow, freezing, stuck on the logo
Often a failing hard drive rather than a worn out laptop. An SSD and a clean install transforms machines people are ready to throw away.
Keys not working
Individual keys, a whole row, or a keyboard that types the wrong characters. Sometimes a spill, sometimes just wear.
Liquid damage
Tell us as soon as it happens and do not try to charge it. What happens next depends entirely on what went in and how long ago.
What affects the cost
The part, mostly. A standard screen panel is very different from a touchscreen or a high refresh rate display, and some manufacturers make parts far easier to get hold of than others.
Then how much has to come apart. A battery on one machine is two screws, and on another it is a full strip down. We work that out during the free quote rather than guessing at it up front, which is why there are no prices listed on this page.
If board level work is involved, that is a different conversation and we will tell you plainly whether it is something we can take on.

MacBook Pro 16-inch — water spilt on the keyboard
Part of a bottle of water went straight over the keyboard. Once it dried out the sound and speed came back, but the Return key typed several characters per press, or nothing at all.
With the base off, the spill had reached the main board and started corroding its edge, and both fans were packed with lint. We cleaned out the fans, fitted a replacement keyboard top case, moved the board, fans, speakers, trackpad and the owner’s own Touch ID button across, and ran Apple Diagnostics. Every key works again, and nothing on the Mac was wiped.
HP 15s laptop — charger tip stuck in the port
The end of the charger plug had snapped off inside the charging port, so nothing would go in and the laptop could not charge.
We got the broken piece out without bending the thin pin inside the socket, then tested the port with a known-good charger. It charged normally, so no new port was needed.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 — cracked screen
Dropped, and the panel had gone. Everything else in the machine was fine, which is usually how it goes: the screen is a separate part, so a cracked one rarely means a dead laptop.
Base off, battery disconnected, display cable unplugged from the board, old panel off, new one on. Booted first time.

Do you charge to look at it?
No. Quotes are free, and if you decide not to go ahead there is no charge for the diagnosis.
Will I lose my data?
Back up anything you cannot lose before handing any device over. Some repairs need storage wiped or replaced, and a drive that is already failing can lose data regardless of what we do. Tell us what matters on it and we will work around it where we can.
How long will it take?
It depends on whether the part is in stock or has to be ordered, so we will tell you when we quote rather than promise a time we cannot keep.
Is it worth repairing, or should I replace it?
Sometimes replacing is the right answer and we will tell you when it is. A machine worth £150 with a £120 repair is a bad deal and we would rather say so.
Do you guarantee the work?
Yes. Ninety days on the work done and on any parts we supplied. It does not cover new damage, liquid damage, or a different fault appearing later.
Is my device insured while you have it?
Yes. Customer devices are insured while they are at our Wakefield workshop. They are stored securely and handled with care, and if one were ever lost or damaged through our fault, we would repair it, replace it or pay its fair value. See our repair terms.
