A slow computer is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It might be a dying drive, a machine full of software that starts itself, a fan so clogged the processor is throttling, or a failing power supply causing crashes that look like a software problem.

Working out which it is takes longer than fixing it, usually. That is the part people are paying for, and it is the part we do before quoting anything.

Common faults

Will not turn on

No lights, no fans, or fans that spin for a second and stop. Often the power supply, sometimes the board, occasionally something as daft as a wall socket.

Blue screens and random restarts

Memory, storage, drivers or overheating. These leave traces in the logs, which is where we start rather than reinstalling and hoping.

Painfully slow

The most common job we see. A mechanical hard drive in a modern machine is usually the culprit, and an SSD is usually the cure.

No display

The machine sounds like it is running but the monitor stays dark. Graphics card, cable, monitor or board, and they are quick to tell apart.

Overheating and loud fans

Dust, failed fans or dried out thermal paste. A machine that shuts down during games or video is usually telling you it is too hot.

Viruses, pop ups and browser hijacks

Toolbars you did not install, adverts appearing over everything, a machine that behaves like it is working for somebody else. More on virus and malware removal.

Windows will not load

Stuck in a repair loop, missing boot device, or an update that did not survive being interrupted.

Storage failing

Clicking noises, files that will not open, or a drive that keeps disappearing. Stop using it and tell us straight away, because continuing to use a failing drive makes recovery harder.

What happens when you bring one in

We start by finding out what is actually wrong, which sometimes means running it for a while rather than taking it apart immediately.

Then you get a quote covering parts and labour, and the honest version of what we think. If a machine is old enough that spending money on it is a poor decision, we will say that instead of taking the work.

Nothing starts until you have agreed the cost. If you decide against it, there is no charge.

One we did

Gaming PC case opened up with a new ASRock motherboard and tower cooler fittedThe same gaming PC rebuilt and running, with RGB fans lit

Gaming PC that wouldn’t boot

After an upgrade to a new AMD setup it would only start now and then, stuck on the CPU and memory lights on the motherboard. Fans spinning, no picture, no BIOS.

We worked through it one part at a time: known-good RAM in both slots, with and without the graphics card, then a different power supply. It failed every time, which left the motherboard and CPU. Both were replaced under the retailer’s returns, and after a rebuild, BIOS update and stress test it now boots every time.

Luke was very helpful with me and diagnosing my problems and building my gaming PC setup. He kept consistent contact with me with regular updates and plenty of great advice. He also once the PC was back home offered to support me with other bits over the phone. Very helpful, knowledgeable and fair. Would definitely recommend!

Questions people ask

Do you charge just to look at it?

No. The quote is free, and free to walk away from.

Can you get my files back?

It depends on the drive. If it is a software problem the files are usually fine; if the drive has physically failed, that is specialist work and we will tell you honestly rather than experiment on the only copy you have.

Do you work on Apple computers?

Tell us the model and we will tell you honestly whether it is something we can take on.

Can you come to me?

Message us and ask. It depends on the job and where you are.

Do you guarantee the work?

Ninety days on the work done and on parts we supplied.

Is my device insured while you have it?

Yes. Customer devices are insured while they are at our Wakefield workshop. They are stored securely and handled with care, and if one were ever lost or damaged through our fault, we would repair it, replace it or pay its fair value. See our repair terms.

Tell us what it is doing.

A message with the make, the model and the symptom is enough to start. Quotes are free and there is no charge if you decide against it. We are open 24 hours, so send it whenever suits you.
